VIP CAR NUMBERS











It is a blessing in disguise that Delhi Government had to discontinue faulty practice of allotting VIP numbers for cars after CBI raid on Ashok Malhotra possessing 52 luxury cars with VIP numbers. It is not understood how and why political rulers could start new series so frequently only to allot desired numbers to their favourite ones without completion of earlier series, and also by starting all new fancy-series with an extra ‘F’ in the number! Fancy numbers of series reserved for scooters were also wrongly allotted to cars.











There can be two ways to allot VIP numbers which should include all numbers ending with ‘000’, single-digit numbers and numbers with all the four numerals same from ‘1111’ to ‘9999’. One way can be to allot all such numbers only to government-vehicles. Second one is to auction these numbers at start of a new series through media-publicity. Already many states are generating handsome revenue by such auction. But in no case a new series may be started before close of an earlier series.











Present system of fixing ‘C’ for cars and ‘S’ for scooter can and should be done away by separating registering-authorities for cars and two-wheelers. Since registering-authorities have their own identifying number like ‘6’ in a number DL6C-1234, same should recognise class of vehicle also widening scope to use all the 26 alphabets from ‘A’ to ‘Z’ presently blocked by alphabets ‘C’ and ‘S’ only. In present faulty system, numbers swell to ten digits in place of eight.
